Three-tab vs. architectural

Three-tab shingles are the older, flatter style — cheaper, but rated for lower wind speeds (typically 60–70 mph) and generally the first to show granule loss and curling. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are thicker, layered, and rated for roughly 110–130 mph wind when installed to spec. Nearly every replacement we do now is architectural; three-tab has mostly aged out of the market for a reason.

What "30-year shingle" actually means here

Manufacturer warranty periods are based on lab-accelerated aging, not this climate. In practice, a 25–30 year rated architectural shingle in the Rockford area tends to perform for 18–22 years, because the freeze-thaw cycling this region goes through dozens of times a winter flexes and cracks the shingle mat faster than a steady, moderate climate would. That's not a defect — it's just what freeze-thaw does to asphalt over time. Budgeting around 20 years, not 30, is the more realistic planning number.

What separates a good install from a bad one

• Nailing pattern and count — six nails per shingle in the manufacturer-specified zone, not four. Under-nailing is the single most common cause of early wind damage.
• Starter strip at the eaves — a proper starter course, not a flipped row of standard shingles, seals the first course against wind-driven rain and ice.
• Ice-and-water shield at eaves and valleys — non-negotiable in this climate; see the roof replacement overview for how that's installed.
• Ventilation balance — intake at the soffits has to roughly match exhaust at the ridge, or the attic traps heat that melts roof snow and feeds ice dams.

Color and profile

Architectural shingles come in enough colors and shadow-line profiles to match brick, siding, or a neighborhood's general look without much compromise. Darker shingles run slightly warmer in summer sun; lighter shingles show algae streaking a bit less over time in this humidity.
