Belvidere, IL

The Boone County seat, about 15 miles east of Rockford — an older downtown core surrounded by newer residential growth.

Downtown age, and what's grown up around it

Belvidere's downtown and the neighborhoods immediately around it date to the early 1900s, with the kind of steep-pitched, multi-plane rooflines typical of that era. Development since has spread outward with more standard ranch and two-story subdivisions, much of it tied to the city's long manufacturing base — Belvidere has been home to a major auto assembly plant for decades, which shaped a lot of the residential growth around it.

Severe weather isn't limited to hail and wind here

In June 2023, a tornado struck Belvidere and collapsed the roof of an outdoor concert venue during a show, a serious reminder that this part of northern Illinois sees real tornado risk on top of the more routine hail and straight-line wind seasons. It's worth knowing your roof's wind rating and getting it inspected after any severe weather event, not just after hail.

What that means day to day

Outside of severe event years, Belvidere sees the same freeze-thaw winters and hail-season summers as the rest of the service area — see Storm Damage Roof Repair and the ice dams guide for what to watch for through a typical year.

We also cover Cherry Valley to the west, between Belvidere and Rockford.
